While all CARES Resilience Hubs in the Vibrant Hawai‘i network will serve restaurant-prepared food, the following sites are dedicated Food Hubs, that is they are hosting food distributions to increase food security among vulnerable kupuna and households.
HPP - HPP Activities Center: 2nd Fridays 3-5pm, 2nd Saturdays 7-11am, 4th Tuesdays 1-3:30pm
Kea‘au - Sure Foundation (day/time TBD)
Leilani Estates - Leilani Community Association: Friday 9am
Pāhoa - HAAS: Wednesday 9am
Waipi‘o - Waipi‘o Valley Lookout: Tuesday & Thursday 5pm
Waimea - St. James Church: Tuesday & Thursday 4:30pm
The University of Hawai‘i at Hilo will serve as an emergency food pantry for students of the university as well as Hawai‘i Community College.
In addition, Vibrant Hawai‘i is partnering with Chef Hui to build community and economic resilience on Hawai‘i Island through food, thus supporting the stabilization of local food systems and restaurants to ensure vulnerable households have access to food. As our island community navigates an upended economy and disruptions to our social structure as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, this collaboration will serve as a catalyst to accelerate our food sustainability goals, drive an agriculture-focused economy by supporting local food producers and local chefs, and feed our most vulnerable and underserved communities with healthy, nutritious foods.
A component of the Chef Hui model is creating a sense of connectivity through sharing ALOHA, one meal at a time. Check back soon for a list of participating restaurants, which will offer customers the ability to “Give & Go” - purchase a meal for a person in need while picking up their take out, thus amplifying the positive impact.
If you are a restaurant, food truck, or farmers market food vendor who would like to produce a set amount of meals to support the Vibrant Hawai‘i CARES Resilience Hubs initiative, click here to fill out the participation form.
The combination of restaurant-prepared grab and go meals, food bags, and emergency pantries of food offered by the CARES Resilience Hub network will establish critical contingencies that ensure vulnerable households have access to food when food drops do not meet demand.
