A Different Way Forward, What KōCreate Made Possible

Over the past six months, 28 individuals from across Hawaiʻi Island made a commitment—to step forward, lean in, and take a more active role in shaping the future of their communities.

Through KōCreate: Designing Homegrown Futures, a Vibrant Hawaiʻi initiative supported by the Trust for Civic Life, this group—known as KōCreators—spent time building both the skills and relationships needed to move ideas into action. Their work centered on priorities that continue to surface across the island, including housing, economic opportunity, energy resilience, and disaster preparedness.

Throughout the journey, KōCreators developed practical skills in communication, planning, organizing, and leadership. Just as important, they practiced how to bring people together in meaningful ways—how to hold space for different perspectives, ask better questions, and move conversations toward something tangible.

At the final gathering, that growth was easy to see.

KōCreators stepped into the role of facilitators, guiding sessions they had designed themselves. Instead of simply sharing ideas, they created opportunities for others to participate—inviting dialogue, surfacing shared priorities, and working through real challenges together. The energy in the room reflected something deeper than a program outcome. It showed what becomes possible when people feel prepared and trusted to lead.

What comes out of KōCreate isn’t a single project or plan. It’s a group of people who now carry the experience of organizing, facilitating, and working alongside others to move ideas forward. That kind of capacity doesn’t stay in one room—it continues to show up in neighborhoods, in meetings, and in the everyday decisions that shape our communities.

We are proud of this cohort and the intention they bring to their work. The relationships built and the skills practiced over these six months will continue to influence how communities come together and take action across Hawaiʻi Island.

Mahalo nui to the Trust for Civic Life for their partnership, and to every KōCreator who chose to show up fully for this experience.
