At the end of September, an article caught our attention about Gen Z graduates being fired just months after being hired. Why is this happening?
The report reveals that many employers are quickly letting go of Gen Z workers due to concerns about professionalism and workplace readiness. Over 60% of employers have already dismissed new hires, citing lack of motivation, poor communication skills, and unprofessional behavior as key issues. Consequently, some companies are now hesitant to hire recent graduates at all.
In high school, we’re often taught that obtaining a degree will ensure a job, but there’s a crucial aspect that isn’t emphasized enough: the fundamental skills and values needed in the workplace. As the article points out, attitude is everything, and we agree that this needs to be a focal point in education.
However, how can we bridge this gap when our generation often lacks guidance on the importance of these soft skills?
It’s more crucial than ever to teach our youth about workplace expectations and to shift away from the idea that formal qualifications alone are sufficient. While degrees may help secure a job, the right skills and values are what will ensure long-term success in the role.
