This year, 31 distribution sites across Hawaiʻi Island served 6,000 keiki each week from June 16 to July 25. “The underlying purpose of food security is important, but I think the bigger message is caring.” said Julie Lawrence, Old Airport Distribution Site-Lead.
Kaukau 4 Keiki is a powerful example of what community-driven action can achieve. It creates opportunities for residents to share their time, skills, and compassion, transforming the relationship between community and service—from one of client and provider to one of collective contribution and empowerment. This shared effort strengthens relationships and promotes a deep sense of belonging across communities.
“As we conclude our fourth year of Kaukau 4 Keiki, we celebrate a powerful milestone—19,000 children nourished through this community-led effort. To every volunteer, partner, and ʻohana who made this possible, mahalo. Your commitment to food security and community care continues to strengthen the foundation of resilience across Hawaiʻi Island.” Janice Ikeda, CEO, Vibrant Hawaiʻi.
