In partnership with Arbor Global, and Resilience Alliance member, Backyard Monkey, four members of the Volcano Emergency Response Team are chainsaw-safety trained and certified. Vibrant Hawaiʻi is proud to support communities around the island to reach their resilience goals by covering the cost of chainsaw safety certification, First Aid/CPR certification, and all the supplies and safety gear so that teams are better equipped to serve and support the community.
Chainsaw Safety certification expands our ability to respond effectively to local needs, as well as mitigate hazards before an emergency response is needed. In the year ahead, the VERT team will continue to hone their skills through quarterly activations in their community.
"The classes were outstanding! We did not know what to expect and at the end of our second and final session, we all agreed that it exceeded our expectations. Each of us had some “backyard” experience with chainsaws, but we learned far more than what we thought we knew about operating a chainsaw, maintenance, safety, felling and bucking trees, and the planning process prior to and during cutting operations. I would highly recommend this basic chainsaw course to any hub member that might find themselves having to clear a road of fallen trees during a disaster or to mitigate a life threatening situation caused by a fallen tree.
We planned this two-day class with the objective of providing members of our team with some basic skill sets to enable them to respond to road blockages caused by fallen trees during a disaster. These objectives were definitely met, and then some! This newly acquired skill (resource) will definitely add value to our disaster response capabilities and VERT’s mission to assist our community when disaster strikes" Doug Wilson, Volcano Emergency Response Team Lead.
